It offers superb beaches, spectacular desert scenery and a wealth of historical sites dating back nearly 3,000 years to when the ancient city of Carthage dominated the entire western Mediterranean. The combination of Islamic culture and European approach makes Tunisia a very popular North African holiday destination. Day 1: Tunis -

Arrival at Tunis airport

Day 2: Tunis - Bardo-Carthage - Sidi Bou Said

After breakfast we start a sightseeing tour of Tunis with a visit to the to the medina (old quarter) of Tunis, which the largest in North Africa (larger than those in Fez, Algiers or Cairo). We then visit Bardo Museum, the finest museum in the country and one of the best archaeological museums in the Mediterranean region. Housed in an old palace that once belonged to the Husseinite beys, who were former rulers of Tunisia, it is especially known for its beautiful and extensive collection of mosaics that date back to Roman times. Proceed Lunch is optional

After we visit UNESCO World Heritage site of Carthage, which was founded in 814 BC and was the oldest Phoenician settlement on the coast of North Africa. Many wars were waged against the other Mediterranean powers such as the Greeks and the Romans before the city was ultimately conquered by the Romans in 146 BC. Although partially hidden due to ongoing development over ensuing years, monuments such as the Antonine baths, Roman amphitheatre and the Punic ports hark back to the glories of a bygone era, whilst some of the best relics can be found in the archaeological museum of Carthage. We continue to Sidi Bou Said Andalous village and stroll through narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses with blue shutters and doors. Here we can also check out the various art galleries or try a bambalouni (a light and crispy Tunisian style doughnut) in one of the cafés that offer superb views of the Gulf of Tunis.

Day 3: Tunis-Thuburo Majus-Testour-Dougga-Tabarka

Departure to the Roman sites in Thuburb Majus, a real treat for lovers of history. Which was known as Colonia Julia Aurelia Commodus in Roman times is located on the north of Tunisia. It was originally a Punic town, which lies 60 km south of Carthage. Later, it was founded by Augustus in 27 BC and became an important trade. During excavations in this region, many Roman remains have been found as the Roman Capitol, forum, baths and theatres, which are worth looking at on your visit to Thuburbo Majus, Then direction to dougga via Testour best preserved Roman site in Tunisia, set in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains.

Day 4: Tabarka-Ain Darahem-Kairouan

From Tabarka the road winds up through cork-oak forests to the picturesque town of Ain Draham, almost 1000 metres above sea level, before heading south to the Roman site of Bulla Regia, distinguished from other Roman sites by its underground villas, so built to offer protection from the summer heat. Then continue to the delightful hillside town of Le Kef before reaching the Roman site at Makhtar where you will have a chance to see Punic, roman and Vandal monuments. From here you head for the holy city of Kairouan

Day 5: KEF - Kairouan-Sbeitla-El Jem-Mahdia

You start the day with a visit to the historic monuments in this ancient city, including the Great Mosque, the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi, the Aghlabide pools and the Medina. Continue to Sbeïtla

First stop is Sbeitla (Sufetula). Though scenically not as striking as Dougga, the site is well worth visiting as it includes some excellent Christian remains and an excellent 2nd century forum complex. The next treat is El Jem (Thysdrus) and its Roman coliseum. Though smaller than the coliseum in Rome it is in better condition and you will be able to visit the underground chambers which housed the gladiators and wild animals. From El Jem you continue to the coast for Mahdia.

Day 6: Mahdia-Monastir-Sousse

visit the ancient Medina of Mahdia before travelling north to Monastir.

Monastir was the birthplace of Habib Bourguiba, who lead the country out of French rule in the 1950’s and now houses the beautiful twin minareted Bourguiba Mausoleum. You will also have a chance to visit the Medina, originally built around the 8th century Ribat. A short drive north brings you to Sousse.

Day 7: Sousse-Hammamet-Nabeul-Kerkouane-Tunis

From Sousse its up to Hammamet for a visit to its small Medina, then Nabeul – the ceramics capital of Tunisia. Continue to Kerkouane where you will have a chance to visit the only all Punic site in the country before returning to your hotel in either Tunis or Sousse for dinner and overnight stay

Day 8: Tunis-Airport

Our trip ends today, after breakfast.
